Impact Carbon’s mission is to improve health and the environment through clean energy projects that reduce carbon emissions.
Impact Carbon generates carbon-emission reductions from household energy projects that improve living conditions in the less-developed communities we serve. We leverage the financial returns from these projects to benefit local partners and people.
Impact Carbon, formerly the Center for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development, began as a research center within the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley. At that time, we focused on developing relevant and comprehensive methodologies and instrumentation for evaluating stove performance. Today, we are focused on quantifying greenhouse gas emission reductions and on building business models for reinvesting carbon revenues to increase stove distribution and dissemination. In partnership with JP Morgan Climate Care, Impact Carbon co-wrote the Gold Standard Methodology for Improved Cook-Stoves and Kitchen Regimes and was the first to originate and register a voluntary Gold Standard cookstove project. For the past six years, Impact Carbon has worked with researchers and practitioners to bring clean-burning and efficient stoves and fuels to the millions of people suffering from indoor air pollution and energy poverty. We have successfully completed pilot projects in Uganda, Kenya, Mali, Ghana, China, and India and are looking for additional partners around the world.

Impact Carbon acts as an intermediary between the social sector and the carbon financing market. The social sector consists of NGOs and for-profit enterprises that distribute clean-burning and efficient stoves and fuels to the millions of people suffering from indoor air pollution and energy poverty. To help reduce the cost for bottom of the pyramid households, Impact Carbon sells the carbon offsets generated from clean-burning stoves and leverages the financial returns. Such carbon finance provides an opportunity to develop and grow sustainable enterprise, by allowing local partners greater financial freedom to engage in robust marketing and sales strategy.
