Core Team

Cindy Chen, Founder

Cindy Chen is the Social Marketplace’s Founder, overseeing the majority of content and design related to the site. Prior to her work at the Social Marketplace, Cindy worked internationally as a business development and marketing strategist for a Chinese electronics manufacturer, a supply chain consultant for a global footwear company, and as a strategy consultant for Fortune 500 tech firms. Cindy’s passion is for helping entrepreneurs tackle social and environmental challenges, with an emphasis on marketing strategy, design thinking, and sustainability.  She has a BS from MIT in Management Studies and a MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

Caitlyn Toombs, Editor

Caitlyn is responsible for day to day management of the Social Marketplace, including editing submissions, compiling resources, and troubleshooting any problems that arise. In addition to her responsibilities with the Social Marketplace, Caitlyn is a Program Associate at Impact Carbon, where she manages partnerships in Uganda to scale local distribution of efficient cookstoves. Prior to joining Impact Carbon, Caitlyn worked in environmental advocacy and with poverty alleviation and community development programs, managing volunteer outreach efforts and development initiatives in the southeastern US. Caitlyn holds a dual BA in Public Policy Studies and Cultural Anthropology from Duke University.

Evan Haigler, Founder

Evan is the Executive Director of Impact Carbon, where he leads a team in developing carbon finance for projects in less-developed countries. He contributed to the Voluntary Gold Standard Methodology for Improved Cookstoves and Kitchen Regimes V.1, is the lead editor for Version 3, and worked as the lead project developer on the first Voluntary Gold Standard Cookstove Project. Evan’s research and publishing has focused on carbon methodology development and monitoring for improved stoves, and on assessing and valuing the associated social, health and environmental cobenefits. He is Co-Chair of the Carbon Finance Working Group at the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, and in collaboration with Dr. Kirk Smith published “Cobenefits of Climate Mitigation and Health Protection in Energy Systems: Scoping Methods” in the Annual Review of Public Health. Evan holds an MS in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley and a BS in Molecular, Cellular, and Development Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Matt Evans, Founder

Matt has experience developing social marketing and clean energy projects focused on poverty reduction in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In Uganda, he managed the first ever Voluntary Gold Standard efficient cookstove project. Matt was formerly the co-founder and Executive Director of He has worked in developing country enterprise growth with the Nonprofit Enterprise and Self Sustainability Team (NESST) in Santiago, Chile, where he specialized in enterprise monitoring and strategy development. He has worked in product management with the solar energy company SunPower and in social entrepreneurship with Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. He is currently the Managing Director of Impact Carbon. Matt holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and a BA in International Relations from Stanford.

Corey Butler, Developer

Corey Butler is responsible for the development and continued maintenance of the Social Marketplace.  Corey has extensive web development experience and enthusiastically brings his skillset to this important project. He has dual BSEs in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Duke University.


Tielman Nieuwoudt

Tielman Nieuwoudt has extensive supply chain and operational experience, covering more than twenty emerging market economies in Asia and Africa. He has managed end-to-end supply chains, from forecasting through order entry, control, inventory management, and Go-to-Market planning and implementation. He is a contributor to Logistics Insight Asia, CHaINA (China) and Vietnam Supply Chain Insights (Vietnamese) magazines. Tielman is a Certified Supply Chain Professional (APICS) and has a Bachelors degree in Marketing (SA) and a MBA in International Business from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
